Live Music in and Around Cape Town
If you like your music live you are in for a treat in the Mother City most days of the week with a range of venues and genres to choose from. Here’s where to go:
Aces ‘n’ Spades
If rock ‘n roll is your thing, head to Aces ‘n Spades for a luxury Cape Town night out disguised as a trip down grunge drive. Despite its tatty décor and irregular schedules, Aces ‘n Spades has shelves filled with top notch whiskies, fridges bulging with craft beers and attracts a trendy, well-heeled clientele to enjoy them along with some great sound. Check their Facebook page to see what’s playing next.
Alexander Bar Upstairs
Live jazz emanates from the intimate 40-seater space of the Alexander Bar & Café’s second-storey on Tuesdays. Folk is on the cards every Wednesday and comedy acts are the order of every other day of the week. Check out their website for details.
Ever so trendy, Asoka is the place to go for awesome cocktails and live jazz in this glamorous old Victorian on Kloof Street. It’s the place to be after 8:45pm on Tuesdays, and a DJ takes over at 10:30pm to ease you into hump day and on to the weekend.
Café Roux Sessions
Both the Noordhoek and Shortmarket Street branches of these session settings are going all out with live muso’s on the cards most Wednesdays to Saturdays. Names large and small are known to frequent the stage at these established venues. PJ Powers went unplugged there last month and Jack Parow is on his way this September along with Lance Herman, Rubber Duc, Sterling EQ and Lo-Ghost.
La Vie Café Bar
Sea views and sultry blues beats are up for grabs every Sunday at this Seapoint eatery from 4:30pm. Entry is free to diners and the amazing antics of this one man band are the perfect way to end a winter’s weekend.
Villain’s Ale House
Located on Hout Street, this English style pub features the laid back strumming of Josh Grierson live between 5 and 6pm every Wednesday, with a happy hour to match. In fact, you can pay half price on beers and house wines every Tuesday to Saturday during this time. Villain’s offers a luxury Cape Town experience up in the loft or you can rub shoulders with the regulars downstairs.
Wherever you find yourself during your Cape Town stay you are sure to find somewhere to kick back and listen this winter.
